Yes, I am about to get a year older this month but those numbers are just a state of mind (at least that's how I want to see it now, LOL), the important thing is that recently I feel like I have grown wiser not just older. Sure I thought I was mature enough before having a child but I slowly realized that as I nurture my daughter to grow, I end up growing myself by being a more mature mother and individual. I have learned that this so called "mother's maturity" comes in stages. I am in and have discovered STAGE 2 and I am sure that as my baby and I both grow, there will be more realizations and stages that we will gladly go through. So what are these stages?
STAGE 1
Forget about me, It's all about the baby now. This started when I was pregnant with my daughter. All of a sudden, it doesn't matter if I don't get the purse or shoes I am eying as long as I spend the money on her stuff... cool and pretty stuff. I wanted the very best for her and so I acquired so many things. And when she finally arrived, there was a time when I just stopped and looked around me with all the LOOT I've bought and received and I realized that she doesn't really need much, certainly not ALL of these things, and most importantly, "best" does not necessarily equal "trendiest or most expensive"... which brings us to stage 2...

STAGE 2
True joy does not come from material wealth. Sure it's nice to have pretty things but I realized that the best things in life are free. I know it sounds cliche' but it is true in this case! Walking to the park with my baby to have a picnic, watch the clouds, trees and flowers is so much fun that you realize that it doesn't matter what kind of stroller (and how much it costs) you used to get there. The expensive portable playpen/crib that I MUST MUST have back then becomes USELESS as it is more fun and satisfying playing with her while she is on my lap or snuggling with her on the couch during nap time.
The look of satisfaction on my baby's face after eating or getting a nappy change far from home is more satisfying than knowing you carried her diaper and bottle in your pathetic designer purse or bag that other people laboriously try to snag on eBay! A cute little expensive toy you bought for her does not compare to her excitement when reading her a Dr. Seuss book or reciting poems such as The Three Little Kittens - haha. Who cares about those cute pricey dresses and outfits, we now know that the cheap bow or ribbon on her hair is what makes her whole "look" irresistible! She doesn't need all the toys and gadgets to get entertained, the only thing she wants is her mother singing her lullabyes or nursery rhymes and cheering an excited "Yaaaay!" as loud as possible after! Haha.
And the list goes on...
Before having her, I used to think... Ooooh, I will be the coolest, hippest, and trendiest mom on the block when I have her! Now, I feel terrible for even thinking that because it makes a baby seem like an "accessory". I also used to wonder why some moms "settle" on things for their babies, now I know that they weren't settling, it was what worked! Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that having pretty things is bad, I just realized that these pretty things are not MUST-HAVES. And when I go out sporting "cool, pretty stuff", the reality is nobody cares about them even if I like to think that everyone does... Yes, I was that shallow less than a year ago. Haha. Now, If I only knew these things before getting pregnant and having my daughter, I would have a decent savings account! Haha. You live, you learn!
